Synopsis for Final Project
Final Project Synopsis: Rita Bole v Stonehenge
For our final project Nick and myself will be doing a piece on what it is like to live in Rita Bole. Living in Rita Bole is very different comparative to living in the Stonehenge resident halls.
We will show what Rita Bole has to offer as far as what the dorm rooms are like and what extra utilities students get by living there. We will then show a suite in a Stonehenge dorm to show how it compares to a Rita Bole suite.
For the Rita Bole suite we will be interviewing friends of ours, Zach Rodrigues, Matt Drew, Duffy Webster, and Jeremy Holden, to get their take on living in Rita Bole and what they do not like about it and what they do like about it.
For the comparative aspect to Stonehenge we will be interviewing our friend John John who has a room in the Stonehenge dorms, and who also spends a lot of time in the afore mentioned people’s suite, to get his spin on what it is like to live in the Stonehenge dorms and what he thinks is better.
Finally we will interview an RA to get him/her to get their take on what it is like to do rounds in Rita Bole compared to the Stonehenge dorms.
We will incorporate still pictures as well as video to tell the story. Adam will do the shooting, Nick will do the reporting, and we both will do the editing.

Video Project 2 Text
Lyndon State College is a Vermont
State College located in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in a small town
called Lyndonville.
As a student, you can choose many paths to go
down in your college career. However, there is one that stands out from the
rest. News 7 is a student run newscast that broadcasts out to the neighboring
towns around Lyndonville.
Courtland Hanley, a senior at
Lyndon State, works as a reporter for News 7. He is a senior web producer for
the News 7 website, Newslinc. This is his first semester as a web producer and
enjoys it very much.
Hanley works with three other web
producers down in News 7 during the semester. The three of them rotate week
long shifts and average about 6 hour shifts per day.
Hanley wanted to become a web
producer because he loves the internet. ESPN.com is his most visited website as
he is a huge sports fanatic. He gets most of his news from the internet. Working
as a web producer allows him manage what news should and should not go online.
Hanley also likes the “free schedule”
of web producing. He says that down stairs in News 7 there is a 5:30p deadline
which is when you need to get stories in. However, up in Newslinc, “you are
done when you’re done and it is a little bit more relaxed.”
As a web producer, like Courtland, he
finds stories for the reporters down in News 7 so he will contact the producer downstairs
and so they can figure out the more important stories are and then the stories
are brought up into Newslinc for the writers to work on.
When the stories are upstairs,
Hanley assists the writers and looks the stories over and give them some
feedback. He then he posts the stories on the website in order in which they
were finished for the public to see.
Hanley says that he cannot wait to web
produce next year for his last year at Lyndon State College.

Synopsis for Final Project
For the final project we were thinking about putting on a snowball fight outside of our building located on campus.
We will be using both stills and video for this final project. Audio will also be incorporated into our final with natural sound.
Our plan is to get a group of students going against each other and "fighting" for their lives. There will be two groups on either side of the "snowball fight" grounds. The team to hit the most people on the opposing side wins the game.
The plan is to use both a go-pro and an iPhone for the video portion. We will have a recorder for the natural sound portion.
The game is still up for correction.
Adam will be shooting the video and audio and Nick will be shooting the stills and writing up the final story.

Synopsis for Video 2
For this project, we are going to be shooting a day in the life of a web producer for Lyndon State College's news website, Newslinc. This will be featuring Courtland Hanley, who has been a web producer for the website for about 5 months.
Throughout the video, Courtland will discuss what his job description is and what it takes to be a web producer. He will show us how he picks the stories that he wants on the website and how he decides those stories that will be posted. Courtland will then give us a 1 on 1 on reasons why he likes and dislikes web producing.
We will be using an SLR digital camera for the shooting of this video project. Adam will be shooting the production and both Adam and Nick will be editing it. Nick will be doing the writing portion of this project.
We plan on shooting this project while Courtland is working on his shift as a web producer.

Guitar Hero Tournament: Overview
Guitar Hero is a musical rhythm game that turned into a series in 2005. The series currently has seven minor releases and four expansions on gaming consoles and has become a sensation. Guitar Hero continues to be popular with the entire world and is still selling in high numbers.
Zach Rodrigues has been playing Guitar Hero since he was 12 years old. When he plays, he focuses only on the game and nothing else. With purchasing almost every game in the Guitar Hero series, he could be considered one of the best.
In this short video, we see Rodrigues duel against three contestants, Matt, Jeremy, and Duffy and blows them all out of the water. We asked them that they play on the same difficulty as Rodrigues which was "expert", the most hardest difficulty. On every song, Rodrigues scored an 85% or higher on the most hardest difficulty. Throughout the video, you can see that Rodrigues doesn't even have to put in an effort. In one clip, we can see that he plays the guitar behind is back without even having to look at the buttons on the guitar.
After every contestant was finished matching up against Rodrigues, we interviewed them separately and everyone time we asked them what went wrong, their response was, "He is just too good." and that they need more practice.
Rodrigues says that he will keep playing Guitar Hero because it is fun and it relaxes him. He knows he is good but wants to get better. There are plenty of people that are better than him in the world and he wants to increase his skill level.

Video in Newspapers
For this assignment, i chose the USA TODAY online newspaper. http://www.usatoday.com/
This newspaper does have multiple videos that you can watch that involve up-to-date stories. One video I watched was on the bottom of the home page titled, "A Warrior without a war faces challenges at home." This video runs about 3:30 and describes how a solider is struggling at home. This video was actually pretty interesting.
On the right side bar, there are more videos to look at. One of them is about the rare solar eclipse. This one lasts only 28 seconds. http://www.usatoday.com/videos/news/2013/11/03/3421803/
This online newspaper looks very professional. However, there are more pictures than videos. It still tells the stories very well though.
Many of the subjects are interesting. The categories include: News, Sports, Life, Money, Tech, and Travel. These topics are very important to the readers.
Overall, very nice online newspaper.

CNN iReport Critique
This website is pretty interesting. It definitely has interesting story topics. Unlike CNN.com, iReport has stories from members of the community. Plus, everyone around the world can share a story on this website, not just from the U.S. It is definitely more interactive than a regular news website. I definitely think this website is a good idea. It can give the public a different perspective on other communities.
One story that I found interesting was the first one on the top of the page when I took a look at it. It was about bullying and how it could be considered bullying if you beat a team in football 91-0. It gives many examples about it. The public can also put in their input at the bottom of the page. You can also have the opportunity to share the story either on Facebook or Twitter.

Feature Story: Floor Hockey with Matt Drew
Over the weekend, an event occurred in Lyndonville, Vermont in the
Lyndon State College Bole gym. At 8 o'clock, on Sunday October 20, Team Matt
Drew took on Team J.D. in a competitive intramural sport of floor hockey. This
would be Team Matt Drew's 6th game of the season and the first against Team
J.D.
Coming
into Sunday night's game, Team Matt Drew's season record was 5-1. The team was
feeling very confident coming into the game and expected to win against Team
J.D. However, this was a very competitive game because both of these teams are
very good.
Matt
Drew was starting and Goalie Joe Anderson was in the net for Team Matt Drew.
For Team J.D. Michael Desmond was in the net. The game began with a quick goal
by Matt Drew with just minutes into the first period. Drew continued to dominate
the game as he scored a hat trick and had two assists. A hat trick is when
three goals are scored in the same game by a player. The final score of the
game was
11-0, team Matt Drew.
Drew
has been playing ice hockey for 14 years and this is his third year playing
floor hockey for the Lyndon intramural team. He says that floor hockey keeps
him active and helps him stay in shape. Since he also plays for the Lyndon
State club ice hockey team, he says that floor hockey helps him stay loose when
he isn't at the rink.
Susan
Henry, the Athletic Facility Supervisor/Intramural Athletics Director of Lyndon
State College puts together the intramural games and makes the schedule,
including floor hockey. She also is the referee for some games. Henry hires
student referees to ref the floor hockey games. Drew says that without her,
there would probably be no well-organized intramural games.

Sound Slide Synopsis
Adam and I will be going to an intramural hockey game on Sunday October 20 to watch team Matt Drew play team J.D. at 8pm. These two teams are the best teams in the League which is why it will be a good head-to-head match up.
While attending, we will be taking pictures of these two hard-playing teams battling against each other in the Stannard Gymnasium at Lyndon State College. The intended audience for this project will be everyone who attends Lyndon State. There are many students who love to watch intramural sports, and hockey is definitely a crowd-pleaser. While the slideshow is in progress, we will be interviewing one of the star players on team Matt Drew, Matt Drew himself. This will give the audience a different perspective on the game and will help the audience stay more engaged throughout the show. He will describe what is going on and give us some insight throughout the game.
Adam will be the photographer for this project and I (Nick) will be the writer. We both will then edit the piece together using the editing software, Avid.
We will be using Olympus cameras to shoot this project for the slideshows. The pictures we will be taking include action shots of the game, as well as Matt Drew himself.

Critiquing Silent & Audio Slideshows
SILENT SLIDESHOW: Journey to Mecca
http://www.reuters.com/news/pictures/slideshow?articleId=USRTX14803#a=11
This is a silent slideshow that shows 20 images of a trip throughout Mecca. The first picture shows Muslim pilgrims pray on top of Mount Thor in the city of Mecca. The following images takes us through the city of Mecca and the historic monuments there. I like this photo gallery because it really describes the journey through the city of Mecca even without sound. However, without audio, this doesn't give you as much detailed information. You have to really use your imagination and figure out whats happening in each picture.
AUDIO SLIDESHOW: Somalia surgerons
http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/audioslideshow/2013/may/28/somalia-surgeons-mogadishu-audio-slideshow
This slideshow I viewed is with audio and makes a huge difference. Instead of just pictures, it describes what's happening in each image as the pictures scroll through. This makes the show more interesting as well as easier to understand. This one is definitely better at telling the story for the reasons I pointed out above.
PHOTO GALLERY: Landscapes
http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photo-of-the-day/landscapes/
This photo gallery is of landscapes throughout the world. With no audio and just pictures, this gives you a nice view of nature and its beauty. Audio is not needed in this because these pictures tell 1,000 words.

Newslinc Critique
Newlinc looks very much like a real news station website.
It is very simplistic and easy to navigate. The top bar has your basic categories including, weather, sports and news.
I think the twitter bar should be updated and that would definitely be very cool.
Overall, I like the idea of this and it is a good way for us as the students to learn whats to come in the real world.

The 2013 Boston Red Sox
The 2013 Boston Red Sox are the perfect example of a team that has gone from worst to first. For a team that looked like they were on the down fall, to turn the season around like they did has been absolutely remarkable. First and foremost it starts with the manager. Having Bobby Valentine as a manager for the Red Sox was one of the worst hirings that this team has done in a long while. Bringing back John Farrel though was probably one of the best decisions that Ben Cherrington could have made for the upcoming season. And for only having to give up who? Mike Aviles? Yes please and thank you.
Another factor has been the players that Cherrington brought in for this season. New players such as Mike Napoli, Johnny Gomes, Mike Carp, Stephen Drew, Koji Uehara, David Ross, Ryan Dempster, Jake Peavy, were not just brought in as their skills as a baseball players, but their presence in the club house as well. All of these players are leaders in the club house and that is exactly what the 2012 Red Sox were lacking. The team chemistry of the 2013 Red Sox is that of a championship worthy team thanks to the likes of the afore mentioned players as well as John Farrel.
The on field production turnaround too has been remarkable. The pitching staff last year, which was one of the worst in the MLB ranked at 27th, has been the biggest and most important turn around with the pitching staff this year ranked at 11th. Having Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz return to being the form of Aces a top of that rotation has been key. Having John Lackey and Felix Doubrount take another step in success in a Red Sox uniform anchoring the back end of that rotation solidified the rotation. With Ryan Dempster being basically a non-factor bringing in Jake Peavy was key to locking down the final spot in the rotation and making the rotation solid and a rotation to be beckoned with in the playoffs.
The offensive turnaround mean while has not been much of a surprise but it has been nice to watch. Watching the top offense in the league has been fun, well as watching the team crush the tarting pitching of opposing teams night in and night out.
Finally one of the more promising contributions has been the young players that have come up from AAA. Red Sox fans got a chance to look at players like Allen Webster, Rubby De La Rosa, Stephen Wright, Drake Britton, Brandon Workman, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Xander Bogaerts whom are projected to make impacts for the big league in the immediate as well as for many years to come.
Overall the 2013 season has been a major success for the Red Sox and they are expected to be one of the teams competing to be left standing at the very end when it is time to crown a World Series winner.

Outline of Podcast
I will be conducting an interview with Adam Donnelly. In this discussion we will talking about the remarkable turn around the Boston Red Sox had this 2013 baseball season. We will discuss what the Red Sox did to accomplish all the goals that they did, including, clinching the AL East for the first time since 2007. Since we are both huge Red Sox fans, we have a lot to talk about.

Podcast Critiques
The first podcast is by ESPN's Buster Olney who leads the baseball discussion from Thursday September 12 2013. http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=9665038&s=espn
A little background information: This baseball show goes live at 8AM every Monday through Friday. The show goes for about an hour. I picked this one because I love the sport of baseball and the talk of the sport.
Every show starts off with a "this day in baseball history", which is very informative and interesting. This broadcast talked about how the batting helmets were first introduced on this day back in 1952. I really like how they start off with this section. This keeps you listening and engaged to the show.
Later on in the show, they talk about Derek Jeter from the New York Yankees. Olney gives us information on Jeter and then we hear an interview with him. He talks about why he hasn't played for the Yankees that much this year due to an injury. I like how Olney can get interviews with the baseball players to help with his story and to carry it on to make it worth listening.
There are also other live interviews conducted by Olney including, baseball analysts which helps make the show more informative.
Overall- If you are a baseball fan, you will enjoy this show. It talks all about baseball and how the teams are currently doing in their divisions. Olney also talks about different player in every show and conducts interviews with the players, past and present. I will definitely continue listening to this podcast. I have not downloaded it on any device yet but I will soon.
The second podcast is "Get fit Guide" which offers tips on how to get fit fast and easy. This aired on September 9, 2013.
A little background information: This show comes out with one new episode about every week or two. Each show is anywhere between 8 and 12 minutes. I picked this because it looked interesting.
This particular show talked about how to not drink a lot of caffeine and stay away from moldy food. As well as different smells which cold cause "brain fog" and toxic your brain.
I liked how the host of this talk show kept throwing out different random facts that would help you gain muscle and get in shape. It is very informational. However, I believe each episode should be a little longer, this way the show can slow down. Since the show is only 10 minutes long, it throws out facts really quickly. Also, the host has a big vocabulary. Most of the words he said, I didn't understand. He should explain what each word means.
I don't think I will continue listening to this podcast. Although it is interesting, I don't think it is for me. However, if you are a big work-out person, you would like this. I have not downloaded this on any device and I don't plan to.

WOODTV Critique
This website is very easy to navigate which helps find information that you might be looking for. It is very simple. The top stories are at the top of the page for easy access as well.
Since I am a big weather fanatic, i checked out the weather section of the website and I didn't find it to appealing. There are not a lot of features. However, it does have the simple features including radar, satellites, and other maps. I do like the live webcam that is set up on the page. It seems to keep up to date.
What really surprised me was there is no "sports" section where all the tabs are on the top of the page. Usually the sports tab is a big feature.
The day that I looked at this website, there was a school closing. It reported it right at the top of the page. I thought that was pretty cool and convenient for the public.
The website also has a live-stream button so you can watch the channel live from any mobile device. This definitely comes in handy if you can't get to a television.
They also have a Facebook and twitter page so people can check the news via social networking.

Vermont Bridge Washed Away by Flood
A 75 year old bridge was washed away last year due to major flooding over the creek.
The bridge is a 33 foot span over the creek along Roaring Creek Road. Roland Lively, the department head of the County Department of Transportation, says the county didn't have enough money to replace the bridge. "We already had some money in the county budget for repairs but it wasn't enough to replace it."
Since some federal money was available for use, the county took advantage of it and the bridge was repaired quicker than expected.
When the bridge went out, it created horrible transportation for the Oak Grove residents. They had to drive a lot farther than they wanted to. Oak Grove resident, Josh Spiva said, "Traveling all the way has made it inconvenient for a lot of people." Spiva continues to say that they have had to use a lot more gasoline.
Bridge re-opened.
After the opening ceremony for the bridge, residents say they are happy that it is back open.

Critiquing Blog
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
I really enjoyed this blog because it pertains to the topics I enjoy, baseball and baseball trades. Also, there is a search bar so you can search about trades and posts. What I disliked about this blog is that it is very wordy. I think the posts can be shortened and it would be a little more enjoyable.
This blog is updated anywhere between 2-5 times a day.
Depending on the story, there are comments on the stories and posts, so the public is reading them. The public can also post comments from Facebook and Twitter.
This blog has pictures and links so you can get more information on the story. However, I am not seeing a lot of videos posted. More videos would help.

NICK ARESCO
I customized and designed my blog to the things that I love.
When picking pictures and captions, I first thought about what describes me the best. The Boston Red Sox is a big part of my life as I am a lifetime fan. Another interest I have is the weather. I have been a weather "geek" for as long as I can remember. Also, I like to keep the design as simple as possible so that you don't get destracted to easily. I believe the content it more important that the actual animation. I like to post many pictures of my adventures but will also sneak in stories from time to time. Welcome to my blog!
